So, where to begin?

As always, our advice on effective teaching and behaviour management starts with yourself. Think about what sort of impression you are going to make as you enter the classroom. The way you dress says a lot about you. You don’t have to power-dress but just consider what your appearance says about you. Ask a partner or friend for his or her opinion. You need to give the outward appearance that you are calm, confident and in control (even if you don’t feel in the least like that).

Teacher training turmoil sparks recruitment fears

The government’s flagship reform of teacher training, which puts schools at the centre of recruiting new staff, has come in for severe criticism from heads who are concerned about poor-quality applicants and “cumbersome” bureaucracy.

Places on the School Direct programme, which launches in September, will go unfilled in some parts of the country because of a dearth of properly qualified applicants, school leaders have warned.

School Direct: some direct answers to the big questions

School Direct begins in September 2013 and replaces the Graduate Training Programme. It is available in primary and secondary schools across England and successful completion will lead to the award of qualified teacher status (QTS). School Direct programmes may also include a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE).
