How should I tackle this? Should I hope it will blow over or do I make a big deal about it!

Speak to your head teacher and personally I would go to the police if the lie could result in me being sackable.

This is a matter best dealt with by contactiung the Head and explaining the situation. Pupils must not be allowed to spread such rumours and although facebook is the current media - all through the ages pupils have made mischief with rumours about what teachers do/have done. The matter should be taken seriously with a warning to the pupil about such behaviour. Log it formally in the school. James

As others have said - don't keep this to yourself. Tell the headteacher about it, spreading rumours about teachers is a form of bullying and you must not tollerate it. In the meantime, perhaps you should address the whole class about this - explain that silly rumours are not acceptable and that there will be serious concequences if it carries on. Something like this could damage your career if it's not dealt with head on - chances are the student doesn't understand the implications of such a rumour.
