I am very fortunate to have got an NQT job in a school where I have a choice of year group, one of which is a combined year 2/3 class. I wanted to ask if anyone had experience of teaching a mixed year group class and how you've found it? Also, given the stresses and strains of the NQT year is it a reasonable challenge, or a step too far? Any advice would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Mixed year teaching is fairly common in small primary schools and I do know of schools that take on NQTs for such posts (one local one has a mixed year 5/6). Usually there are staff there with plenty of expertise to help the new teacher who has not taught mixed year groups before (even experienced teachers will need help if it is new to them). Provided you are happy that there will be expertise and support on hand then it should not be a major issue to complete induction in a mixed year setting. James
