Financial planning advice for new teachers

As a newly qualified teacher, there are a number of life changes that may be just around the corner, such as buying a home or getting married. As you reach the end of your course, now is the perfect time for you to start planning for your financial future to make sure you’re in the best position to achieve your goals.

Clear your debts

Clearing any outstanding debts should be your first priority. Here are a few tips to help you manage your debts effectively:

Induction: your welcome to the teaching profession

How you are welcomed into the profession will have a great impact on your work and longevity in teaching. It is to be hoped that your school has established a good induction programme to aid this process. So what can you expect?

All new teachers on induction are now being assessed against the new Teachers’ Standards that were introduced on 1 September 2012. To help you navigate the induction process and understand the new standards you will be allocated a mentor.

Become a better teacher by getting more rest

You’ve probably already broken the futile resolutions you made while pie-eyed, singing the new year in. But one unofficial “promise to self” still reverberates a couple of weeks on from your ugly awakening on New Year’s Day. Repeat after me: “I will be a better teacher this term. I will be a better teacher this term. Now pass the gin.”

Free Schools: What are they like to work in?

Free schools receive a lot of coverage in the headlines but are an unknown entity to most teachers. NQTs can do their induction in any free school that is prepared to offer this. In fact, as legal entities, free schools are no different from academies – the label refers only to the set-up mechanism.

Free schools have the same governance structure as academies and likewise do not follow nationally negotiated pay scales or terms and conditions for their teaching staff. These must negotiated individually by teachers at the time of their appointment.

Job prospects for NQTs brighten

At the end of a year – or perhaps four years – of hard work and hefty tuition fees, new teachers have every right to expect decent job prospects. After all, it is the government’s responsibility to match supply to demand, by training the right number of graduates for each subject. But clearly, in the past few years, something has been going wrong.

Since 2007, teacher unemployment has more than doubled in the UK – from 16,000 to 38,000. That’s 8.6 per cent of the total workforce.
